Of the 75 selected research projects, thirteen are Spanish, and of these, nine, or 70%, are initiatives led by research centers based in Barcelona and Girona. Specifically, the University of Girona has been awarded European funding in the field of developing digital diagnostic systems that assist in the medical decision-making process. The project that will receive these public funds is called iToBoS Intelligent and aims at the early detection of melanomas.

The other eight Catalan projects chosen by the Horizon 2020 program are research initiatives promoted from Barcelona by Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, Mar Parc de Salut de Barcelona, Fundació de Gestió Sanitària de l'Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Institut de Salut Global de Barcelona, Institut d'Investigació Oncològica Vall d'Hebron (VHIO), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), El Consorci de Salut i Social de Catalunya, and the European Foundation for the Study of Chronic Liver Failure (EF-CLIF), which has funding from Grifols.

  • Sant Joan de Déu Hospital will receive funds for the Spiomet4Health project, focused on adolescent girls and young women suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
  • The Consorci Mar Parc Salut de Barcelona has been chosen for the ICOD research, linked to patients with Down syndrome.
  • L'Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau will develop the Tique project, to offer quick responses for people with advanced heart failure and complex care needs.
  • L'IS Global has obtained funds for Recetas, a research program in the field of initiatives that aim to improve health and well-being in urban environments.
  • The VHIO will be able to finance CCE_Dart, a project linked to big data to develop a new methodology in clinical trials.
  • The UAB has obtained European money for Plasticheal, one of the five programs chosen by the EU to evaluate the impact of micro and nano plastics on health and develop tools to fight against this problem.
  • The Consorci de Salut i Social de Catalunya has obtained three million euros for EquityCancer-LA, research aimed at improving social equity in access to early cancer diagnosis.
  • The European Foundation for the Study of Chronic Liver Failure has won the bid with the 4A-Tango program, which investigates a new treatment for acute liver failure.
"EU funding for research and innovation projects is an essential element of our response to Covid-19, but we also do not neglect other crucial issues for health and well-being," highlighted the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel.
