The port of the Catalan capital maintains the recovery path initiated in July thanks to the increase in container exports from industries located in Catalonia and its area of influence. Thus, in September, more containers destined for the foreign market were shipped than in the same month of 2019 and, for the first time since the pandemic broke out, export figures similar to pre-crisis levels have been reached.

Despite the good performance of exports, the total container traffic in the Port of Barcelona recorded a 19% decrease between January and September. According to the infrastructure chaired by Mercè Conesa, the Far East and Japan remain the main destination for goods passing through the port. It should be noted that this evolution largely responds to the agri-food sector thanks to the pull experienced by certain products, such as pork, in China. Thus, container traffic to the Asian giant has grown by 46.6% during the last nine months.
Between January and September, the Port of Barcelona has moved 42.4 million tons, a figure that represents an 18.4% drop. The decrease in cruise volume is higher, with a 92% setback as a result of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. Another highly affected sector is the automotive industry. Until September, 320,830 new cars passed through the port, 44.6% less. On the contrary, rail container traffic has evolved upwards, with an increase of 1.6%, thanks to the powerful intermodal infrastructure available at the port.
