The territorial council of the General Society of Authors and Publishers (SGAE) in Catalonia has chosen composer, lyricist, musician, arranger, and orchestra conductor Joan Vives as its new president. The body will represent all author and publisher members of the entity in Catalonia for the next four years and is composed of nine other members, such as composer Giulia Valle and screenwriter Carmen Fernández.

Vives (Barcelona, 1953) is a renowned composer and lyricist with a vast professional career. He has dedicated his career to composition for audiovisual media and theater. He is the author of the music and lyrics for several musical theater works and a regular collaborator with the companies Dagoll Dagom and La Cubana. He has composed the soundtracks for more than twenty films and also the theme tunes for Catalunya Ràdio and Catalunya Música stations, among many others.

The new president had previously been part of the SGAE territorial council in Catalonia when it was launched, from 2013 to 2015, and has also been a member of the board of directors and the management council of SGAE and the board of trustees of Fundación SGAE in several legislatures.

In his new stage, Vives hopes to "influence and deepen the dissemination and importance of understanding the main features of intellectual property and copyright in society as a whole." In this regard, he believes it is essential that the current members of the council reflect on "the unity of the cultural sector, how the difficulties added by the current health situation have been especially serious and grave for a world that nourishes all of society with creative talent."

The territorial councils were created in 2012 with the intention of bringing the entity closer to its members in various territories. Among their objectives is the channeling of the concerns and demands of their associates, such as carrying out initiatives in defense of their interests and promoting their repertoire. Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, Galicia, Madrid, the Basque Country, and Valencia have territorial councils.
