Below, a selection of the In-Edit 2023 program.

Esta ambición desmedida

Santos Bacana, Cristina Trenas, and Rogelio González. 2023 | Spain | 118 min.

The film follows C. Tangana's daily life for four years, from the gestation of the album El madrileño (2021) to the launch of the international tour Sin cantar ni afinar, and is presented as "not a tour, not a documentary, it's a tragedy." A work that lasted four years and premiered last September at the San Sebastián Festival. It is commented that the film "blurs the line between what is real and what is represented, the character and the person, the creators and the work." Expectation is high. Not a single ticket remains for any of the scheduled sessions.

Personality Crisis: One Night Only

Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi. 2022 | United States | 144 min.

Perhaps a small miracle is to think that David Johansen, former leader of New York Dolls, is still among us, after a life of excesses and, why not say it, of failures in the NYC punk scene. His performance a few years ago at the Sidecar venue is still remembered with delight, as Roberto Tierz recalls in Este no es el libro del Sidecar (2023). Johansen recorded a moderate hit under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter performing jump blues, traditional pop, and swing, accompanied by The Uptown Horns. Later, without leaving music, he began acting. The documentary recognizes some of these facets, as he did in his presentation at the Café Carlyle in 2020. David Johansen intervenes.

Heaven Stood Still: The Incarnations of Willy DeVille

Larry Locke. 2022 | United States | 87 min.

The life and miracles of an American singer and songwriter, one of the most original of the last 50 years. Although Europe embraced the songbook and the bohemian figure of Willy DeVille, most American listeners ignored his music. In part, the documentary gives off a vindictive sense. DeVille was born William Borsey and is the embodiment of all excesses and bad luck. Like few others, he had a broken hand for making songs, and unrepentantly traded NYC for New Orleans and its fantastic Creole music. Ben E. King, Mark Knopfler, Sting, Peter Wolf, Jack Nitzsche, Hal Willner, and Chris Frantz participate.

Blues Under the Skin

Robert Manthoulis. 1973 | France | 88 min.

The convergence between the two registers delves into the essence of the blues, music that is experienced, felt, and lived.

Revolutionary Quartet, l'enigma Gerhard

Xavier Bosch and Josep Badell. 2023 | Spain | 94 min.

Robert Gerhard (1896-1970) has been one of the fundamental names in 20th-century musical creation. A student of Schoenberg in Vienna and Berlin, he used dodecaphonic technique without abandoning his interest in the folkloric materials of his homeland. From his exile following the Civil War, he developed a personal language with a strong experimental vocation that even led him to pioneering use of electroacoustics. The fiftieth anniversary of his death in 2020 served to partially reclaim his figure. The premiere of the documentary emphasizes this narrative to recover an indispensable figure of musical creative freedom.

Participants include Quartet Gerhard, Oriol Pérez Treviño, Carlos Duque, Colin Benders, Jaume Radigales, and Edmon Colomer. The organization highlights that, after the documentary premiere, "the privilege" of seeing the quartet live will be offered, whose name pays homage to this key author of dodecaphonism and serialism.

The tocaor has managed to recover his lost health and well-being. In fact, he has recorded Parque de María Luisa (2017), a very well-received album.
