How Big Tech makes money

march 13, 2018 - 15:19

Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Facebook are the five main technology companies in the world. Each of them has opted for a different business model and a main source of income.

Statista has prepared an infographic summarizing the total revenues of these five companies in 2017 and showing their main line of activity, the one with which they obtain the most income, and what percentage these represent of the total.

The most radical case is Facebook: 98% of its revenue comes from advertising. In Google's case, advertising is also its main business avenue, although for the search engine, ads account for 86% of total revenue.

For Apple, the sale of technological devices, including the iPhone, is the number one source of income: hardware contributes 81% of the company's revenue. In Amazon's case, retail trade accounts for 82% of revenue, while for Microsoft, software represents 62% of its total revenue.
