From the classroom to the field: the Catalan Level Instrukta transforms training in prevention

With a staff of more than 40 workers and five centers distributed between Sant Joan Despí, Cerdanyola del Vallès, Sabadell and Girona, the company trains more than 10,000 professionals each year to face occupational risks in sectors such as construction, industry, telecommunications or mining

Converting theory into practice. This should be the goal of any training: transferring knowledge acquired in the classroom to real situations. An essential mission, especially when it comes to occupational safety, to prevent accidents and protect workers. Especially in sectors such as construction, where falls from height and machinery accidents are common risks, learning is fundamental to anticipate and act with confidence and safety.

In fact, construction continues to be one of the sectors with the most workplace accidents in all of Catalonia: in 2024 alone, more than 12,000 incidents were registered during working hours in this sector —out of more than 95,000 workplace accidents that occurred in Catalonia as a whole—, ten of which were fatal. "Training is a key element to anticipate these accidents, especially when learning sessions are designed practically, considering the conditions and reality of the workplaces," emphasizes Sergi Álvarez, manager of Level Instrukta. The company, based in Sant Joan Despí, has 15 years of experience training workers from different disciplines in occupational safety: from construction to industry, including mining or telecommunications.

It was precisely with the idea of offering more useful and effective training sessions that Álvarez, a technician in occupational risk prevention, decided to launch the company in a small office in 2010, in the SC Trade Center business incubator in Sant Cugat del Vallès. His objective was to respond to a clear regulatory requirement: according to the Occupational Risk Prevention Law (from 1995), the employer must ensure that each worker receives a "sufficient and adequate theoretical and practical training."Álvarez wanted to ensure that this training was not just a mere formality, but "a real and effective tool to prevent accidents and protect the lives of workers." Fifteen years later, Level Instrukta continues to work with this same vision and purpose, but now no longer from a small office in the business incubator, but from a network of five training centers spread throughout Catalonia.A total of 7,000 m² of training centersbetween Sant Joan Despí —where it has two locations, one of them specialized in the logistics sector—, Cerdanyola del Vallès, Sabadell and Girona. These are spaces where real work environments are faithfully reproduced: high-rise structures, platforms and forklifts, industrial areas, confined space simulators and even wind turbines. In these spaces, instead of purely theoretical sessions, Level Instrukta opts for learning based on direct experience: accessing a confined space or one with the presence of some type of gas, acting in the event of possible fires, climbing an elevating platform or practicing maneuvers at ten meters high. "People need to learn with their hands," emphasizes Álvarez, who recalls how training is usually done "from the ground," without students perceiving the real sensation of risk. With this methodology, Level Instrukta trains each year to more than 10,000 professionalsfrom sectors as diverse as construction, industry, logistics, telecommunications, wind power, electricity, industrial machinery, and mining. The company has been incorporating specialized training certifications from different sectors: from TELCO standards for telecommunications to GWO international certification for the wind sector.Additionally, they also offer public training courses, subsidized by the Generalitat, which is committed to training in terms of occupational safety, with professional certificates for employed people, through theConsorci per a la Formació Contínua de Catalunya, as well as for unemployed professionals, through theEmployment Service of Catalonia(SOC).

With a staff of more than forty professionals and a clear commitment to continue growing in Catalonia, Level Instrukta also bets on incorporating trainers who come directly from the field of work: people who have experienced risk situations and who know the conditions in which students may find themselves, connecting directly with their reality and offering training that goes beyond pure theory. "Training must be useful," insists Álvarez. Even so, the manager of Level Instrukta recognizes that there is still a long way to go in terms of preventive culture, as many companies still perceive training as a mere formality to comply with regulations, without understanding its real usefulness.

A comprehensive service

In addition to training, one of Level Instrukta's purposes has been, from the beginning, to offer its clients "a comprehensive, 360-degree service," as Álvarez points out, so that the company becomes an indispensable ally for companies in these sectors in terms of occupational safety. Because, in addition to good training, to guarantee the safety of these workers, safe facilities and adequate fall protection systems are essential.

For this reason, the company supplies, installs and certifies fall protection systems, carrying out the mandatory annual revisions as required by regulations. Likewise, they also distribute personal protective equipment (PPE). On the other hand, Level Instrukta also has a team of twenty installers for vertical work, contributing their technical knowledge in real installations and structures throughout Catalonia, even in spaces as iconic and demanding as the Sagrada Família, which has already become the tallest building in Barcelona's urban fabric.
