The voice of our architect of words has been silenced this Tuesday. According to Margarit's family, less than a year ago he was diagnosed with the illness that has put an end to a life full of verses. His farewell will be celebrated in privacy.

With an extensive original poetic work in Catalan and Spanish, Margarit wrote works such as Càlcul d'estructures, Joana, Casa de Misericòrdia, Els primers freds, Es perd el senyal, No era lluny ni difícil, La dona del navegant, among many others. And he has died leaving his last collection of poems written, Animal de bosque. His words found thousands of readers in Catalonia and the rest of Spain, but also beyond these borders, with translations into multiple languages.

His work has been awarded by some twenty prizes, with the Cervantes 2019 as one of the most recent accolades. He has also received the Reina Sofía Ibero-American Poetry Prize, the Crítica Serra d'Or, the Carles Riba Poetry Prize, the Rosalía de Castro, the Jaume Fuster and the National Poetry Prize from the Ministry of Culture.

Margarit was born in the Lleida municipality of Sanaüja in 1938, in the midst of the Civil War. He was an architect by profession and professor of Structural Calculation at the Barcelona School of Architecture. He spent his childhood, adolescence and early youth in Barcelona, Rubí, Girona, Figueres and Tenerife.

His death has affected politicians, writers, cultural institutions and publishers, including the Kings, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, the Vice President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, and the Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau. Margarit's colleagues such as Fernando Aramburu, Laura Ferrero, Benjamín Prado, Manuel Vilas, Àlex Susanna and Elvira Sastre have also bid him farewell.
