The new pharmaceutical active ingredients plant that Esteve will build in its industrial complex in Celrà will require an investment of 100 million euros from the Barcelona-based pharmaceutical company. With the new facilities, which will be operational during the last quarter of 2026, the company will expand the production capacity of pharmaceutical active ingredients at its main industrial center.
Specifically, the new unit will allow increasing production capacity by 45% over the current capacity of the center, and by 15% over the company's global capacity, as the company announced in May without specifying details such as the investment. With this expansion, the company chaired by Albert Esteve will add about 100 people to its current staff of 370 professionals in Celrà.
For the Barcelona-based pharmaceutical group, the construction of the new unit at the Celrà plant represents a significant advance in the business of developing, manufacturing, and selling active ingredients for third parties. This unit will produce several new products that will be added to its portfolio, and will be distributed in Europe, the United States, and Japan.
The development and manufacturing of these active ingredients has experienced "remarkable growth" at Esteve in recent years, according to the general director of Esteve Química, Pere Mañé. "The expansion of our main industrial center will allow us to meet a growing global demand and expand our activity," Mañé added.
The Celrà plant is Esteve's main industrial center, which globally has a chemical R&D center in Barcelona and three production plants in Catalonia, in addition to manufacturing centers in Mexico and China. Through the activity of its plants, the family-owned Barcelona pharmaceutical company founded in 1929 exceeded 700 million euros in turnover in 2023.
