The Ayra project enters a new stage to understand to what extent the air children breathe at home affects their health. Clinically coordinated by Elena Codina, the initiative has presented the first results of monitoring 20 homes of pediatric patients from Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, which reveal high humidity in 65% of homes, fine particle levels exceeding WHO annual limits in 95%, and ventilation problems in almost half of the cases. Now the project expands its focus to children with moderate allergic asthma, incorporating an application for families, a clinical data control center, and new indices that will relate environmental quality, clinical evolution, and risk of exacerbation to advance towards more preventive and personalized pediatric care.

A pediatrician specializing in nephrology, Elena Codina is head of the Environmental Health Unit at Sant Joan de Déu. Codina is also responsible for coordinating the Ayra project, promoted by a broad group of institutions, including Sant Joan de Déu, Catalonia.Health, Domestic Data Streamers, PUMBA, The Left Bit, and the Kid's Cluster. Codina also promoted the creation of the Maternal and Child Environmental Health Unit in 2022, and is a coordinator and collaborator on various research projects linking environment, surroundings, and health.
