For a time, the topic of elegance and style concerned me quite a bit. On the street, I immediately detected well-dressed people and tried to analyze what made them more elegant or stylish than others. I also bought French fashion magazines and greatly enjoyed looking at the photos and reading the articles: I must say that in France there are serious and very talented journalists specialized in fashion, which is not the case everywhere. I disliked going out with poorly dressed people and found it incomprehensible that some of my friends did not enjoy shopping and dressing up in front of the mirror. For a time, I even had a fashion blog that enjoyed some fame. The posts on masculine elegance were often among the most celebrated. Little by little I got bored, but if I learned anything during that youthful and somewhat frivolous period, it is that masculine elegance —like feminine elegance— is not a physical but a mental matter.

An elegant man reads. An elegant man is generous and wears old clothes. An elegant man does not shout on Twitter. An elegant man does not wear suspenders or vests, unless he is a corpulent elegant man.
An elegant man reads. An elegant man is generous and wears old clothes. An elegant man does not shout on Twitter. An elegant man does not wear suspenders or vests, unless he is a corpulent elegant man. Suspenders and vests are the only two garments that look better on fat people than on thin people. An elegant man is usually intelligent; foolishness is not chic at all. An elegant man does not experiment with his beard or sideburns. An elegant man has read Russian novelists. An elegant man does not talk —anymore— about nationalism. An elegant man knows how to change a car tire, knows how to make Cuban-style rice, and is not afraid of dogs. An elegant man likes children. An elegant man likes women. Most heterosexuals claim to adore women, but it is not true: in reality, they feel more comfortable among men. An elegant man has female friends.

An elegant man has read Proust. An elegant man never eats energy bars. An elegant man spends more on books than on clothes. An elegant man knows how to roll up his sleeves, literally and figuratively. An elegant man does not take selfies. An elegant man does not wear jewelry and has a sense of humor. Albert Camus, Samuel Beckett, Miguel Delibes, Ernest Hemingway, and Vladimir Nabokov were elegant men. If you don't know what to wear to look elegant, imitate them, or even better: read them.
