Damm invests six million to remove plastic rings

The brewing group meets its goal of reducing plastic use with a pioneering project in the sector that opts for a system of grouping can packs made with sustainably sourced cardboard

october 19, 2021 - 12:10

Starting this December, Estrella Damm is already producing 100% of its cans with 100% biodegradable cardboard rings, meaning it has completely eliminated all plastic rings from its packs. Thus, almost 89 million units of plastic rings will no longer be released to the market annually, which will imply a reduction of more than 260 million tons of this material.

This project, on which it has worked for two years, has involved a change in the industrial structure and an investment of more than six million euros. Now, the next step will be to also replace the decorated plastics that wrap the cans with cardboard, with the aim of eliminating them in 2021.

The new system for grouping cans is called LatCub and is made from natural fibers from sustainably managed trees. LatCub has been awarded the European Award for Excellence in Innovation, an award presented by the European Association of Carton Manufacturers (ProCartón).
