Champion Games raises two million for a soccer and cryptocurrency video game

The Barcelona-based startup is looking for professionals with new profiles for the development and execution of a new video game called MetaSoccer, which it wants to promote on a large scale. The goal: to create a new generation of native digital football players and clubs, meaning that the next Messi will be born in the virtual world.

The Catalan startup Champion Games has closed a two-million-euro financing round that it will allocate to the development and execution of the MetaSoccer video game, which combines football with cryptocurrencies, and which has been created with blockchain technology and NFT (acronym for the English expression non-fungible tokens).

Champion Games, based in Barcelona, has designed the video game with play-to-earn players in mind ---who want to have fun but also earn money, which in this case will be cryptocurrencies--- and football fans who want to experience the game through a new metaverse, a virtual world that allows interaction with other users simulating reality. That is, a game in which, thanks to blockchain, a differentiated user experience is achieved through decentralized finance, sports betting, and football.

In this way, users can become entrepreneurs of football teams. Because, as in sports, they have the ability to create and manage their own teams and generate income through their club's assets ---for which they can also seek sponsors---, rent stadiums, or sell players, among other actions. In addition, managers can also train their players to improve them, trying to achieve their maximum performance. At the same time, as in real life, players age and eventually retire.

The financing round has been subscribed by international funds Play Ventures, DAO Maker, Kyros Ventures, Metrix Capital, DeFiance Capital and ParaFi Capital, the latter two specializing in cryptocurrency investments.

The project has the support of youtubers Willyrex and Kmanus88
Created six years ago by Marc Cercòs, Patxi Barrios, and Álex Fiestas, the company already hadthe financial support of the international fund PlayVentures and the Spanish Encomenda---led by Carlos Blanco and Oriol Juncosa---, from a previous funding round in July 2020, in which it reached one million euros. In that case, they were used to boost the gameMister Fantasy, where users assume the role of coaches of a soccer team.

For MetaSoccer, the startup wants a large-scale promotion and, therefore, will allocate resources to marketing actions that give visibility to the game. A goal for which it already has the support of several streamers and youtubers, such as Willyrex and Kmanus88, who have millions of followers on social media.

In the words of one of its founders and chief operating officer of the company, Patxi Barrios, the ultimate goal that Champion Games seeks with MetaSoccer "is to create a new generation of digital native soccer players and clubs, which in the coming years will reach valuations similar to those of professional soccer leagues. In short, we aspire for the next Messi to be born in the virtual world (metaverse) and play on a platform like ours."
