Celsa has inaugurated a new structural profile rolling mill at its factory in Castellbisbal (Barcelona), which allows it to become the only producer of long-length steel beams in Spain and one of only five in Europe. The project, which has received financial support from the Ministry of Industry, has involved an investment of 35 million euros and will favor the company's competitiveness.
The Catalan family business, which has been immersed for months in a tough struggle with its creditor funds to renegotiate the payment of its substantial debt, will now be able to manufacture H600 type beams, one of the largest on the market, as they are used in the construction of industrial buildings and large civil engineering structures, such as bridges and elevated roads.
"Celsa increases its competitiveness with this facility and reaffirms its leadership in low-emission steel production with the opening of new markets in Spain and the rest of Europe," explains the company chaired by Francesc Rubiralta. Until now, this type of long-length profiles was not manufactured in Spain and had to be imported.
The group adds that these new profiles will also be differential in the market because they are manufactured with a "cutting-edge" system in Europe based on the circular economy and with lower CO₂ emissions. It should be noted that Celsa manufactures all its steel from the recycling of ferrous scrap in electric furnaces, unlike its competitors, companies that produce steel in blast furnaces that use coal as an energy source and iron ore as raw material.
"With the completion of our new structural profile rolling mill, Celsa will supply the European industry with long-length, low-emission steel beams that our clients require to reduce their carbon footprint," explained Francesc Rubiralta during the inauguration ceremony of the new facilities, which was attended by the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès.
"We are fully committed to the entire industrial sector of our country," said Aragonès, who recalled that the Govern "has set out to strengthen and expand the industrial weight of the country's economy, and to incentivize the reindustrialization of Catalunya to become one of the most industrial economies in Europe."
