With an eye on this Saturday's Gaudí Awards gala, the Government celebrated this Friday that the success of the films Casa en flames and El 47 has generated an impact on Catalan audiovisuals during 2024. Both these films and the arrival of numerous dubs and subtitles in Catalan to platforms and cinemas have helped to register a record of almost 987,000 cinema spectators in Catalan, a 120% increase compared to the previous year.
Specifically, there have been more than 728,000 viewers for original versions in Catalan, almost 240,400 for dubbed versions in Catalan, and about 18,100 for subtitled versions, following an upward trend in recent years in the consumption of fiction in Catalan. As for the original versions in Catalan, Casa en flames and El 47 stand out very especially during 2024, having broken attendance and box office records, which has consolidated them as two of the most successful Catalan productions in history.
In addition, dubbed productions in Catalan maintained a relevant role in 2024, with the arrival of hundreds of dubs to platforms and with about sixty premieres in cinemas. Some of the films dubbed in Catalan that have been released in cinemas include Inside Out 2, Shin chan: the superhero, Moana 2, Despicable Me 4, Garfield: The Movie, Detective Conan: The Million Dollar Pentagram, Buffalo Kids, Kung Fu Panda 4 or Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Regarding subtitles, more than 700 productions have been subsidized, including feature films and series seasons. This figure represents an increase compared to previous years, highlighting the growth of subtitled versions for platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Movistar +, Max, and Filmin. Thus, productions such as Naruto: Shippûden, Wonka, The English Butler, Dune 2. Poolman, When in Rome, One Ranger, Le Pont du Nord, The Arctic Convoy, Sound of Freedom or Hypnotic have been subtitled.
In total, the Department of Linguistic Policy has supported almost 500 dubs and more than 700 subtitles in Catalan. These figures reflect a growth of 30% in dubs and 20% in subtitles.
