The advanced technological infrastructure conglomerate that Barcelona has has allowed to consolidate science as a first-rate attraction asset for the city and from which the scientific community wants to profit for the benefit of all citizens.
Hence the initiative of the SciTech DiploHub scientific and technological diplomacy hub, which has designed a plan of actions ---presented this Thursday in Paris--- for Barcelona to become, starting in 2023, the capital of scientific and technological tourism. The entity has the support of the International Science Council and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).
The action plan, which includes an international campaign, will highlight all infrastructures and equipment of these characteristics and connect them with international visitors who arrive in the city each year within the framework of professional fairs, business missions, and medical, scientific, and technological congresses.
With a budget of two million euros, the initiative aims to attract more than 100,000 visitors in the next five years. To do this, it will carry out actions, including a series of visits to centers such as the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, the Alba Synchrotron, Tech Barcelona, the Ciutadella del Coneixement, the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park, or the Barcelona Science Park. The meetings will revolve around several thematic axes: life sciences, clinical research, photonics, supercomputing, smart cities, blue economy, and climate action.
As part of the Barcelona Scientific Diplomacy Strategy 2022-2026, Barcelona's scientific capital strategy also includes hosting various international science conferences in 2023, within the framework of the centenary of Albert Einstein's visit to the capital.
This is an opportunity to add value to the visitor economy and contribute to more sustainable and quality tourism, says Alexis Roig, executive director of SciTech DiploHub, a non-profit public-private association that wants to make Barcelona a more influential actor on the global scene, representing its knowledge and innovation ecosystem worldwide.
The proposal will incentivize international meetings with the thematic axes: life sciences, clinical research, photonics, supercomputing, smart cities, blue economy, and climate actionRoig has explained that "Barcelona is the first city in the world with a scientific tourism campaign." "We are making Barcelona ---he said--- not only an attractive brand through its cultural or gastronomic offer butan influential actor on the international scene through science and technology. An ecosystem where to initiate long-range scientific collaborations, open international research or higher education centers, or launch technological projects."
