The America's Cup is the oldest sporting competition in the world and one of the sporting events that generates the most economic impact. With the will to continue reinforcing its international image, Barcelona has decided to join the race to become the host city for the 2024 edition, according to La Vanguardia. Another Spanish city that wants to capture it is Malaga, after Valencia has been dismissed.

Administrations and the private sector of the Catalan capital are working jointly and coordinated to present a winning bid to host this event, sources from the City Council indicate. The city council, the Generalitat and the Diputación de Barcelona, as well as the Port de Barcelona, have joined forces to capture this competition.

"We are committed to Barcelona hosting the 37th America's Cup, one of the most prestigious competitions with the greatest international impact. More than ever, the city is prepared to continue hosting first-class events," defends the first deputy mayor, Jaume Collboni.

For his part, the president of the Union of Sports Federations of Catalonia (UFEC), Gerard Esteva, emphasizes that the America's Cup can be "a great opportunity to promote sport, create new opportunities, and deepen maritime culture and research in our country" and to do so from Barcelona, "a city of sea and sailing."

This tournament already stopped in Valencia on two occasions, in 2007 and 2010. In the 36 previous editions, the competition has traditionally been held in the United States, although in recent years it has also been held in cities in New Zealand, as in the last edition, in 2021, with Auckland as the venue.
