Residents and visitors of Barcelona reinforce their commitment to public transport. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has broken a new record for passengers in 2024, during which it has exceeded 684 million validations in its network. The figure represents a 6% increase compared to its previous best figure, achieved in 2023.

The record has not only been for the overall network, but both metro and buses have registered their historical highs this year. The former has surpassed the 2023 record, while the latter has exceeded the maximum that until now corresponded to 2019.

Specifically, the metro closed the year with more than 469 million validations, while the bus climbed to 215 million, 6% more than last year and 2% more than the previous record of 2019.

The year has been full of historical milestones for TMB, ranging from the day with the most recorded passenger traffic to the best month and semester of the network. The day with the most validations in the history of the network was achieved on Sant Jordi, with more than 2.5 million trips in a single day on the network. The metro, on the other hand, also reached its historical maximum on that day, with more than 1.8 million validations.

This year also saw the best Saturday for TMB, which was registered on December 14, with 1.7 million validations. In addition, buses surpassed their historical highs on a holiday during La Mercè, and on September 24 registered more than 341,800 passengers.

Furthermore, October was a record month in which metro and bus combined for 65 million validations, 3.5% more than the previous best monthly record, achieved a few months earlier, in May also of 2024, and the first semester was the best of the entire historical series, with 352 million validations in the network.

As a culmination of a year of historical milestones, the metro closed 2024 with another record: this December 31 became the New Year's Eve with the most validations in the history of the metro, with more than 312,600 passengers between ten at night and seven in the morning of January 1, 4.8% more than the previous year.
