Behind every merchandise that crosses a border, enters a port, or arrives at a factory, there is a logistics chain that is rarely seen, but which is essential for the economy to function. And in this network, Barcelona has been gaining weight as one of the great logistics hubs in Southern Europe. Its strategic location in the Mediterranean, the importance of the port and the airport, and its connections with the main transport routes have made Barcelona a key point for the movement of goods towards Europe.
This positioning of Barcelona on the European logistics map now translates into a new milestone: the Catalan capital has been chosen to host the European congress of FIATA, the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations, from June 9 to 11, 2027.
The Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona (CZFB), which will host the meeting, has managed to bring to the city an event that will gather hundreds of professionals and companies linked to transport, logistics, and the supply chain. The congress will be held in parallel to SIL Barcelona, the Logistics Innovation Exhibition, also organized by the CZFB and which has consolidated itself as one of the main trade fairs in the sector. The coincidence will mean that for three days the Catalan capital will concentrate a significant part of the international activity linked to logistics and transport.
For Barcelona, the celebration of this new event, one of the great European meetings of the logistics sector, means much more than adding a new congress to an already intense trade fair calendar. It is, above all, an opportunity to internationally project a sector that has been gaining weight in the city and its surroundings. Ports, infrastructures, transport companies, logistics operators, and a growing activity linked to international trade have made the Barcelona area one of the main logistics hubs in Southern Europe. The presence of FIATA will also allow this reality to be brought closer to companies and professionals from numerous markets and strengthen Barcelona's connections with the international logistics sector.
For the executive president of the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona, Pere Navarro, the city's election implies precisely "an international recognition of the strength of our logistics sector and the work carried out for years to position the city as one of the main logistics hubs in the world." This was stated after the news was announced by the director general of FIATA, Stéphane Graber, during the organization's World Congress, which is being held this week in Milan as part of its centenary. Navarro and the general director of the CZFB, Blanca Sorigué, have attended the congress, who highlighted that the event "will attract talent, knowledge, and international connections of great value for Barcelona."

The dimension of the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) helps to understand the scope that the congress will have. Founded in Vienna in 1926 and headquartered in Geneva, the federation brings together 106 national associations and has a presence in nearly 150 countries, with more than 50,000 companies and 4,700 individual members. Its activity covers areas such as digitalization, training, international documentation, and representation of the sector before organizations such as the World Trade Organization or IATA. The fact that an organization of this dimension has chosen Barcelona to hold its European congress reinforces the city's role as a meeting point for the international logistics sector and brings it closer to the main actors who are defining its future.
