The Barcelona City Council has launched Sport-Up, a program that aims to support the creation and growth of companies in the innovative and technological sports industry sector with a global vision in Barcelona. This program, led by Barcelona Activa, has AticcoLab and the INDESCAT sports industry cluster as collaborating entities, which will contribute their sectoral knowledge and guide and support innovative and digital sports companies.
Likewise, this program is part of the municipal initiative to create a sports, technology and innovation hub (Barcelona Sports Tech Hub), which will help boost this sector in the city. Barcelona's goal is to position itself as a reference in Europe in the sportstech field and accelerate the growth and consolidation of new companies specialized in wearables, e-sports, digital training, e-commerce linked to sports, software and physical activity data applications, social platforms or professional tools for athletes, among other subsectors.
Until May 30, applications can be submitted to participate in the program, which will select a maximum of 12 sports projects in this first edition of Sport-Up. The call is aimed at startups that develop their activity in the sports or physical activity sector, especially in projects that are in the product validation phase in the market, or that have a prototype about to be finished and can carry out this process with the support of tutors and experts.
The 12 projects chosen by Sport-Up will have access to training, accompaniment, personalized mentoring, networking activities and will have access to a workspace in the Almogàvers Incubator. The first edition of the program will last 8 months, from June 2021 to January 2022. At the end, Barcelona Activa will award the Sport-Up prize to the best project of each edition, with an economic endowment of 10,000 euros, after a jury has valued it as the initiative with the most potential.
It is estimated that in Catalonia the sports sector generates 2% of GDP and that Barcelona is already the fifth city in Europe in number of sportstech companies.
