Barcelona will transform between October 5 and 10 into an international reference in the field of cycling by hosting the celebration of CICLOBCN2021 which, for the first time, will bring together three congresses on this means of transport in one city. The objective is none other than to vindicate the role of the bicycle in achieving the current and future challenges we face as a society and its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda. The event highlights the bicycle as a safe and sustainable tourist, leisure and sports element, also as a means of transport that meets the strategic objectives of deseasonalization, decongestion and product diversification.

The three meetings, the EuroVelo and Cycle Tourism Congress 2021, the XVIII Iberian Congress The bicycle and the city and the 7th International Bicycle Congress will include exhibition spaces, meetings between professionals, technical visits and a wide agenda of activities in the public space open to everyone's participation. The countdown to the celebration of these events has already begun and registration is open.

This event organized by the European Cyclists' Federation is the main forum on cycle tourism in Europe, which serves to share knowledge and highlight good practices around cycle tourism. It is a biennial event that has been organized since 2012 to promote cycle tourism and boost the deployment of the EuroVelo network, a set of fifteen cycle tourism routes that cross Europe from end to end.

Cycle tourism along the Mediterranean arc is expressed in the EuroVelo 8 route, between Cadiz and Cyprus, which runs through Catalonia and which the Generalitat is promoting from La Jonquera to Ulldecona. Currently, the route in Catalonia is in service between La Jonquera and Sils and it is expected that within the framework of CICLOBCN2021 the access sections to Barcelona through the river valleys of the Besòs-Mogent and the Llobregat will come into operation.

For its organization this 2021, Barcelona ---a city that started the year with a 231-kilometer network of bike lanes--- has competed with important European cities, after the forum has already taken place in Basel, Vienna, Nantes, and Limburg. The candidacy has had the support of the Government of the Generalitat, the Barcelona City Council, the Barcelona Provincial Council, the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), and the Federation of Entities for Cycling Mobility in Catalonia (FEMBICI) and ConBici, coordinator of state entities.

The EuroVelo and Cycle Tourism Congress 2021 will highlight how cycle tourism reactivates the economy and generates jobs in the fields of health, infrastructure, research, and innovation, as shown by the experiences of cities like Limburg (Belgium) and Bologna (Italy) or, without going so far, as can be enjoyed in the Catalan Pyrenees. The meeting --- which, like the rest, will take place at the AXA Auditorium --- will begin with a plenary session to reflect on the contribution of cycle tourism to the challenges of our society, and will feature leaders in the field of tourism, health, and cycling, such as the current director of the World Tourism Organization, Dirk Glaesser, or the president of the World Cycling Alliance, Raluca Fiser.
