Barcelona Finance Cluster: grow together to compete better

Barcelona has a financial history. From the founding of the Barcelona Stock Exchange in 1915 to the strong network of cooperatives and banking, the city has always been an economic engine. In recent years, this engine has been fueled by technology, digitalization, and sustainability. But until now, there was no stable space that connected the entire financial ecosystem and projected its strength outwards. This is precisely the raison d'être of the Barcelona Finance Cluster (BFC): to unite efforts to position Barcelona, and with it Catalonia as a whole, as one of the major financial centers in Southern Europe.

The BFC is an initiative promoted by the Department of Economy and Finance of the Generalitat within the Catalunya Lidera plan. It was born in February 2025, as an evolution of the Barcelona European Financial Center, the first financial services cluster in Catalonia, and today it already brings together companies, institutions, universities, and administrations with a common goal: to grow together to compete better.

Its objectives are clear: to promote financial innovation and digitalization; to foster sustainable finance and impact investment; to attract, develop, and retain qualified talent ---more than 12,000 Catalan students are trained in fields related to economics and finance---, and to internationalize Barcelona and connect it with ecosystems such as London, Paris, Frankfurt, Geneva, or Luxembourg.

This project is built on a solid sector: more than 650 financial companies and an aggregated turnover of 48,180 million euros in Catalonia, which represents an economic weight of 16% of the Catalan GDP. In addition, the cluster's member companies account for 41.6% of the sector's turnover and 57.4% of its employment. The growth of fintechs and insurtechs is also very remarkable, having increased from 50 in 2017 to 162 in the last fiscal year. But the added value of a cluster is not just economic. It is strategic.

A cluster builds trust among competitors, generates shared projects, industrial policies, and market intelligence, accelerates open innovation, and refines strategy. The BFC aims to transform competition into real collaboration, connecting companies, startups, investors, universities, and administration.

The added value of a cluster is not just economic; it is strategic
In the short term, international missions, connection days with investors, and sectoral meetings will be promoted to create concrete business opportunities. And it will be done from a territory with a key asset:Barcelona as the engine of a financial ecosystem that embraces all of Catalonia. A city with consolidated financial infrastructure, apoolof international talent in constant growth, a leading technological ecosystem, and a geostrategic position that makes Barcelona a gateway to the European market.

The financial future is not built from individuality, but from collaboration. The Barcelona Finance Cluster is this platform. To grow, to project, and to compete together. Now is the time to join forces.
