The Barcelona economy adds another year of growth and reaches a new milestone. The city's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has exceeded, for the first time, 100,000 million euros, according to data from the Analysis Department of the Municipal Data Office of the Barcelona City Council. Specifically, GDP stood at a total of 103,589 million euros in 2023, a figure that represents a nominal increase of 9.6% compared to 2022, when it was 94,521 million euros.
Barcelona's GDP accounts for more than a third of the Catalan economy (35.4% in 2022). This percentage is relatively stable, although it has shown a slight upward trend in the last three years.
After the impact of the pandemic, Barcelona's GDP maintained the growth of recent years in 2023, albeit in a more moderate way, with an increase in volume of 2.8% compared to 2022. It should be noted that the recovery of Barcelona's GDP is higher than that of Catalonia and the rest of Spain (2.6% and 2.5% respectively). This behavior is explained by the sectoral structure of the city's economy, where the services sector predominates, an activity that accounts for more than 90% of its Gross Value Added (GVA), 15 percentage points more than the sector's weight in the Catalan economy (75.9%).
According to the Municipal Data Office, Barcelona's services sector represents 42.3% of the sector in Catalonia. Noteworthy, with more than 50% of the weight over the totals for Catalonia, are information and communications activities (73.7%), financial activities (57.6%), artistic and recreational activities (51%), and professional activities (50.7%).
Likewise, the activities with the largest volume of GVA in Barcelona are trade, transport and hospitality (23.6%); public administration, education, health and social services (18.1%), and professional, scientific and administrative activities (15.2%). The three together account for almost 60% of the total services sector.
