To invest in emerging companies in medical technology, biopharmacy, and digital health that provide disruptive solutions and innovative approaches to address unmet medical needs. This is the objective of Sabadell Asabys Health Innovation Investments II (SAHII II), the second fund promoted by the venture capital firm specializing in the health sector, Asabys Partners, founded by Josep Ll. Sanfeliu and Clara Campàs and based in Via Laietana, Barcelona.
Six months after starting negotiations with potential investors to launch the fund, Asabys has just announced that it has already secured investment commitments totaling one hundred million euros. As was the case with the firm's first fund, Banco Sabadell will once again be the main private investor in SAHII II. Asabys also has the support of the European Investment Fund and Alantra.
After this first closing of one hundred million euros, the goal is to continue working in the coming months to attract more investors and raise the fund's size to 200 million euros this year. The idea is to invest these resources in acquiring stakes in 12 to 15 companies in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Israel, and the United States.
"This new fund represents a strengthening of our investment strategy, aimed at exceeding 500 million euros under management in the coming years, with the goal of transforming the cutting-edge science from our research centers into disruptive and effective solutions that allow us to face the challenges we confront as a society in areas such as cancer, neurology, or cardiovascular diseases," explained Josep Ll. Sanfeliu, president of Asabys Partners.
According to the firm, having been able to raise this second fund "confirms the market's interest in Asabys' hybrid investment model, which ranges from biotechnological drugs to digital health applications, including advanced diagnostic solutions and medical devices."
Currently, Asabys has nearly 217 million in assets under management and a portfolio of 12 investees: Agomab Therapeutics, Amelia Virtual Care, Anaconda, CaraCare, Inbrain, KoaHealth, Medasense, MedLumics, Nuage Therapeutics, ONA Therapeutics, SideKick, and SpliceBio. It executed its first divestment in October 2021 with the sale of the Galician biotech company Origo Biopharma to the Belgian company Agomab Therapeutics.
To face the new investment stage opened by the raising of this second fund, Asabys has just strengthened its management team with the appointment of two new partners. They are Sylvain Sachot ---an expert in biotechnology and medical technology--- and Guillem Masferrer ---an expert in digital health---, two professionals from the venture capital sector who have been part of the Barcelona-based management company since its inception.
