An urban laboratory with purpose

Thinking about 22@ in the next ten years inevitably leads me to think about something that is and will be key in the new context that we are already experiencing and will continue to experience: artificial intelligence. AI is no longer a thing of the future; it is a tool that has been fully integrated into our daily lives, into how we learn, work, and make decisions. Thus, the challenge—and the opportunity—lies in defining the role that the district and its ecosystem want and will want to play in this new reality.

22@ was born more than twenty-five years ago with a clear purpose of urban transformation based on innovation and knowledge. During this time, a large number of projects and new technologies have been designed and implemented that have had a positive impact beyond the district. But if we think about 22@ ten years from now, the key question is not what new technologies will have been developed, but how these will have been governed, shared, and put at the service of talent, competitiveness, and collective well-being. Thus, equipping ourselves with collective tools that help us think about and build the future is fundamental.

In this context, the 22@ AI Hub is born, a platform for sharing knowledge, for promoting co-creation, for pooling challenges and opportunities, and for proposing efficient and effective solutions in the short, medium, and long term.

The Hub starts from a very clear conviction of those of us who are part of 22@Network Barcelona: technology—and, specifically, artificial intelligence—does not generate value on its own. Value appears when it is combined with judgment, talent, and a shared vision and when all this translates into something visible and tangible for the ecosystem and for the city.

The 22@ AI Hub represents what the district wants to be in the future; a true urban laboratory with purpose, that functions thanks to the collaboration of companies, institutions, knowledge centers, and citizens. A space that not only improves economic competitiveness but also the quality of life of people. A district capable of anticipating trends and adapting to them to translate them into useful projects, thanks to a Hub where artificial intelligence is put at the service of more human and sustainable growth.

Even so, the future of 22@ will not depend solely on how it adopts this technology ---and others---, but on the capacity of its ecosystem to continue collaborating towards common goals, to decide with criteria and to act responsibly. And, in this sense, the 22@IA Hub is not an option, it is a necessity to make possible the district that Barcelona and its citizens need.
