The food sector has become one of those that has best resisted the crisis caused by the pandemic. In this context, supermarket chains like Aldi are opening new establishments and expanding their workforces. The German company plans to hire more than 1,000 workers during the second half of the year in Spain, with the goal of reaching a total of 7,000 workers. It does so after having already hired about 500 during the first half of the year.

In Catalonia, these plans will translate into the incorporation of more than 200 workers by the end of the year. Currently, the distribution group has a workforce of 1,600 workers in this autonomous community, including store employees, logistics personnel, and office staff. Along with the Balearic Islands, it will be one of the regions where Aldi will hire the most employees in Spain, only surpassed by Madrid, where more than 370 will be incorporated.

The hiring of personnel is complemented by a plan to open new establishments. Specifically, the chain already has 342 establishments in Spain and plans to open 40 more this 2021 ---double that of 2020---. Of these new openings, 23% will be in Catalonia. One of them has been the one located in the old Petit Pelayo cinema, on Tallers street in Barcelona.

Aldi has its headquarters for the Spanish subsidiary in Catalonia. Specifically, it is in Sant Cugat del Vallès. It is also present through its logistics platform in Masquefa, where expansion works have already begun that will allow it to add more than 16,100 square meters to the current 26,779 square meters. The works are expected to finish in early 2022. These works will support the growth of the chain that is occurring both in Catalonia and in the Balearic Islands.
