Adan Medical starts 2022 with the launch of a pilot plan to test AllergoBox, an autonomous box for public spaces with adrenaline auto-injectors that includes all elements of allergy protection and alerts emergency medical services.
The Barcelona startup has developed this medical device which, as if it were a defibrillator for cardiovascular problems, will allow action against cases of anaphylaxis, that is, severe allergic reactions that can affect and even cause the abrupt death of people in public spaces, such as schools, restaurants, sports or commercial centers, and airports or airplanes, among others.
Adan Medical's goal is to begin commercializing the device by the end of 2022, a project for which it has partnered with Montronic Vic for its manufacturing, and with Presaba for its distribution in the Spanish market.
The start of the expansion will require a new round of financing to raise one million euros to stabilize and increase the company's internal structure and begin said commercialization. In the last six years, through various rounds, Adan Medical has secured 1.4 million euros in capital, 190,000 euros in grants, and 340,000 euros in loans.
In addition to the development of AllergoBox, these resources have allowed the creation of AllergoCase, a ready-to-market smart case with two adrenaline auto-injectors that can be installed inside defibrillator (AED) showcases, and AllergoMate, a smart case connected to an app for individual patients already diagnosed who use adrenaline auto-injectables to control their allergy episodes, and which includes geolocation and alerts for family members designated by the patient.
Adan Medical has patented all three products, all of them connected to its own anapphylaxis application, which will provide a snapshot of the user's profile, the location of incidents, and their medical characteristics. This data can aid in medical innovation for this type of condition.
Overall, according to Adan Medical, the management of anaphylaxis through medical devices for adrenaline auto-injectors is a potential market with more than 5 million users globally and constantly expanding.
Created in late 2014 between Barcelona and Silicon Valley ---the idea became a reality during the Imagine Creativity Center innovation program--- by entrepreneurs Anna Sala and Adrian Curran, Adan Medical has grown with the purpose of being a disruptive company in the field of allergies with comprehensive digital technological solutions for allergoprotection. Especially to address cases of anaphylaxis, a severe, potentially fatal allergic reaction caused by food, medication, insect stings, latex… where the only effective treatment is adrenaline.
Statistics show that more than 3% of the population suffers from this type of allergies and that it is especially important in the child segment, since 2 million children in Spain suffer from allergies and 25% of new anaphylaxis episodes occur in a school environment.
Society must be aware of the need to have auto-injectors available in public spaces, a very important step for all patients affected by severe allergies, but also for those who have not been diagnosed and present a first episode, explains Fermín Goytisolo, an executive who has taken over the management of Adan Medical. Goytisolo has joined the company after the financing round subscribed by BHV Partners, a health venture builder in Southern Europe that invests in startups that are developing innovative health solutions that address existing unmet needs. Also shareholders of the firm are private investors Joaquim Trias, a researcher in the biopharmaceutical industry, and entrepreneur Xavier Verdaguer; in addition to the companies Daleph Iniciativas y Organización and Venturangi Capital.
