The arrival of 5G poses one of the greatest technological transformations of recent decades. Comparable to the transition from analog to mobile telephony, 5G allows the creation of intelligent environments and advanced industries at the service of citizens and emerging economic sectors. The progressive development of this technology brings us closer to the Internet of the future and from Barcelona we have all the ingredients to lead this evolution internationally.

With the aim of channeling all the potential of 5G and creating an adequate environment to implement solutions in this area, from the Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation jointly with the Barcelona City Council, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the i2CAT Foundation, the CTTC, the UPC and Atos we have launched the 5GBarcelona initiative. This project will allow us to make Barcelona an open and neutral 5G living lab that, beyond the pure development of infrastructures, proposes a scenario where 5G services and technologies can be tested, piloted and validated. Likewise, this initiative should also provide a stimulus for the existing innovative ecosystem in the city, help attract foreign investment, boost technological startups and facilitate the development of its own business fabric.

5GBarcelona is already working on different scenarios that, for example, will allow us to enter a connected operating room where surgeons collaborate remotely when performing an intervention or see how connected industrial vehicles move earth in a civil work autonomously.

We can therefore say that leading the development of 5G technology from Barcelona will allow us to implement cutting-edge solutions with Big Data in our city, expand the presence of connected vehicles, enhance the use of virtual reality, or normalize the Internet of Things. In fact, 5GBarcelona is already working on different scenarios that, for example, will allow us to enter a connected operating room where surgeons collaborate remotely during an intervention or see how connected industrial vehicles autonomously move earth in a civil construction project. At a technical level, the arrival of 5G networks will allow for greater capacity and speed in mobile bandwidth, ultra-reliable and low-latency communications, multiply the number of devices connected to the network by 100, and finally, reduce network energy consumption by 90%. In short, this commitment will allow us to position ourselves at the forefront of a new generation of mobile technologies.

To better understand the implications of this change, let's look at some simple examples. When we open our mobile browser from the street, it often takes a few seconds for the page to start loading, and once it does, the loading completes quickly. This is not so much due to our data plan or contracted speed, but rather the response times of the 3G and 4G networks we currently use. This response time is the network latency, which will be drastically reduced with 5G and will open new opportunities for both personal and business use of the network.

For example, in the field of vehicle fleet management, we will see how the reduction of latency allows us to supervise remotely or even, without any human intervention. Similarly, 5G will also bring about changes in the management of municipal services. Through the sensorization of cities, city councils will be able to incorporate solutions linked to the Internet of Things, among others, into lighting, irrigation or waste collection systems, offering a personalized service based on the data collected. The possibilities are as many as we can imagine, as are the technological challenges that still need to be overcome. For this reason, a proposal like Barcelona's is key for 5G research to find its space in a real environment, to be prototyped and validated with guarantees, and to break down the existing barriers between the research and commercial fields to offer solutions applicable to any business area.

In an environment of maximum disruption like the current one, from Barcelona we have to capitalize on the opportunities that 5G offers us and be aware of the direct implications it can have for the future of the economy. It is essential that as a digital hub in southern Europe we take advantage of the impact associated with the deployment of 5G services, which can generate €130,000M annually and the creation of 2.3M jobs across the continent. With the development of 5GBarcelona, between 10% and 15% of these magnitudes can have an impact on our environment and position us as the third economy in 5G at a European level.

5GBarcelona is born with the resources and the will to build a project of international scope, from Barcelona and for the world, that maximizes the impact of 5G technology on citizens and businesses. As a long-term project, it needs to progressively expand its scope of action and add new industrial agents to the initiative that allow prototyping more solutions and applying them to specific sectors of the economy. This dynamic is what will allow us to evolve 5GBarcelona, generate more sectoral pilots and turn research projects into a reality to improve people's daily lives.

In the coming months we will begin to see what 5GBarcelona translates into and what applications this technology will have - in fact, within the GSMA Mobile World Congress we will see the first use cases that will be developed. 5GBarcelona opens the doors to the Internet of the future and creates spaces for all of us to have a presence. Get ready to experience, from home, one of the greatest technological revolutions of recent times.
