The fountains of Barcelona, specifically those in Plaza Catalunya and Paseo de Gràcia, the Ciutadella waterfall, and the Francesc Macià spout are once again adorning the city. These are some of the fountains that have been reactivated, after two and a half years without functioning due to the drought. Now, the City Council has begun to reactivate some of the fountains that decorate emblematic spaces of the city, as part of a progressive plan through which the city's fountains will gradually recover water in the coming months.
As they are reactivated, these fountains will be active between midday and 2 PM, and then between 5 PM and 9 PM. The fountains in the city center and in emblematic gardens, however, will extend their operating hours between 12 PM and 10 PM.
In total, Barcelona has 330 ornamental fountains, of which only 85 remained full, serving as refuges for flora or fauna during the drought. The rest will be reactivated over the next few months, starting with a first phase that will end in June.
In this current phase, 68 fountains will come into operation, all of which do not exceed 40 square meters in size. To these will be added the five on the Paseo de Gràcia axis and the one on Manuel de Falla, in Canyelles, as well as the emptying and cleaning of large lakes, such as those of Pegaso, Creueta del Coll, and Espanya Industrial.
The next phase will take place from June to October and will activate 73 fountains in Barcelona between 40 and 100 square meters, including the Font Màgica and the Montjuïc waterfalls. Then, between October and the first quarter of 2026, 72 fountains larger than 100 square meters will recover water. 19 more will remain pending, either because they are under construction or due to pending work to rehabilitate or improve them.
