Ten years ago, Sala Beckett left Gràcia to settle in an old cooperative in Poblenou. What then seemed like a simple change of location ended up becoming the beginning of a new stage for one of the most influential institutions of contemporary Catalan dramaturgy. The Beckett now celebrates a decade in the neighborhood with a day open to the public that combines theater, music, poetry, and the presentation of the 2026-2027 season. The anniversary also serves to highlight the role the venue has played in the cultural transformation of Poblenou and in the international projection of Catalan theatrical creation.
A good part of this history is linked to the figure of Toni Casares, director of the theater since 1997 and practically linked to the project since its origins. With a degree in Catalan Philology and specialized in theater theory and criticism, he has dedicated a large part of his career to promoting new Catalan dramaturgy, both from cultural management and from stage direction. Over the years he has collaborated with institutions such as the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya and has directed productions by authors such as Pau Miró, Josep Maria Benet i Jornet, and Mercè Rodoreda. His name has become one of the great references in the performing arts in Catalonia.
