"Your freedom ends where another's begins," they say. People deprived of liberty are very clear about this. For them, the first step to recovering it is to leave the penitentiary center. Obvious. But the second, equally or more basic, is to feel that they are part of social life: recover self-esteem, surround themselves with people who support them, and find a job. Personal development, human relationships, and employment are precisely the three pillars of Reincorpora from "la Caixa", a program that seeks to enable inmates, upon completing their sentence, to build a better future not only for themselves but for everyone, as explained in this ALMA news article.
To reintegrate into society and fully enjoy freedom, having a job is fundamental. And to find employment, knowing how to listen, being willing to work in a team, and respecting others is as important—or more so—as knowing English or managing social media.
For this reason, the initiatives in which people deprived of liberty who are part of Reincorpora participate go beyond the professional world. Thus, in addition to training, receiving advice from job placement technicians, and doing internships in companies, in a sailing course inmates realize that to conquer the sea, one must first know how to work as a team.
