The new accesses to the Port of Barcelona will begin construction in 2027. They will do so after this year and next are dedicated to drafting the construction projects for the action, which will provide better road and rail access to the port infrastructure. The works will extend until 2032, with a budget of 730 million euros.
Although the works will not begin until 2027, during this year the affected services will already begin to be diverted, with the aim of having everything ready when the projects are available and complying with the schedule. Thus, during this year, work will begin to divert services such as water, gas, and electricity pipelines in the Llobregat area, which will be affected by the project.
This road and rail connection will allow the port to gain agility and competitiveness, as highlighted by the Minister of Territory of the Generalitat, Sílvia Paneque, during a visit to the port with its president, José Alberto Carbonell. The new accesses will optimize the port's connection with the infrastructures and logistics areas in its surroundings, thus improving its intermodality and competitiveness. In this context, Carbonell expressed confidence that "the accesses will adhere to the established timelines."
The new accesses will take shape from two differentiated projects. On the one hand, the road accesses that will connect with the A-2 will be built, and on the other, the road links with the Zona Franca and the Pratenc industrial estate will be developed, as well as the railway accesses and the connection with Can Tunis. Currently, goods circulating through the port from Can Tunis must pass through nine level crossings: "It is neither acceptable nor economically viable," Paneque warned.
The agreement governing the construction of the new accesses, signed in November, establishes that the 730 million euros that both projects will entail will be contributed by the Ministry of Transport, Adif, and the Port Authority of Barcelona (APB), to execute improvement works on the accesses that have accumulated more than two decades of delay. "This is a long-demanded work, since 1999," Paneque emphasized.
According to the agreement, the investment allocated this year to the project will be 8.4 million euros, the same as planned for 2026. With the start of the works, the investment will accelerate with 75 million in 2027, and will then grow to 121 million in 2028, and with figures of around 150 million between 2029 and 2031, and 77 million in 2032. Of the total of 730 million, the Ministry will assume 263 million; Adif, 266, and the APB, 200.
With these two years for drafting the projects and five for executing them, the calendar has already started to move. To meet the established deadlines, Carbonell explained that the basic project has already been approved, and that the construction projects to materialize the new accesses have been put out to tender.
The procedures and actions will continue in parallel with the drafting of the port's next strategic plan, which is expected to be ready by the end of this year to mark the future of the port enclave until 2030. In addition, looking ahead to 2025, the infrastructure will tender and award 250 million euros in works to improve its facilities.
