The ports of Barcelona and Tarragona have joined the shareholding of the Monzón Intermodal Terminal (TIM), thus strengthening the connection between both Catalan infrastructures with Aragon. The Monzón terminal (Huesca) began operating in 2011 and was promoted by Samca, an Aragonese business group with a highly diversified activity, which includes sectors such as mining, renewable energies, agri-food, agrochemical, and logistics infrastructures.

TIM is included in this last section. This platform has two railway stations and is focused on container traffic and bulk solids. With an accumulated investment of 20 million euros since its creation, the intermodal terminal broke its activity record in 2020, moving 1,100 trains and almost 50,000 containers.

After the entry of the two Catalan ports, the Samca group still holds the majority of the company's capital with 75%. The new partners will control 15% of the capital, with the Port of Barcelona holding 10% and the Port of Tarragona 5%. The shareholding is completed by LogiRAIL, from the Renfe group, which owns the remaining 10%.

This operation will serve to consolidate the terminal's business, which will incorporate the commercial vision and international growth opportunities represented by these two ports, characterized by the predominance of Barcelona in maritime freight traffic and Tarragona's specialization in agri-food bulk. More specifically, the incorporation of the Port of Barcelona will boost meat exports from its reefer container division (with controlled atmosphere). It will also entail the expansion of the Selgua track of the platform, where the port authority will invest in the coming months.

The signing of the incorporation into TIM's share capital took place at the Llotja de Mar in Barcelona in an act presided over by the Minister of Economy, Planning and Employment of the Government of Aragon, Marta Gastón, and by the Director General of Transports i Mobilitat of the Generalitat, Mercè Rius. Also participating in the event were the president of the Port of Barcelona, Damià Calvet; the president of the Port of Tarragona, Josep Maria Cruset; the president of Renfe, Isaías Taboas; the general director of LogiRAIL, Óscar Gómez; the president of the Samca Group, Javier Luengo, and the general director and CEO of TIM, Rubén Orera.
