La Rambla already has a date to celebrate its new stage. On the weekend of February 13 and 14, 2027, the emblematic Barcelona promenade will host a great citizen festival that will serve to officially inaugurate the urban transformation started in 2022 and reclaim the return of this space to the daily life of Barcelona residents. Under the motto Rambles amunt, rambles avall and with artistic direction by Lluís Danés, the celebration will turn the promenade into a large open-air stage where music, circus, dance, poetry, popular culture, and visual arts will coexist. The objective is to recover the emotional bond between citizens and one of the city's most iconic spaces.
More than an inaugural act, the proposal is presented as a declaration of principles. The spirit of the celebration aims to be the same that has guided the entire transformation process of La Rambla: for Barcelona residents to reclaim the promenade as their own and recover a space historically linked to coexistence, culture, and urban life. The objective is to pay homage both to the popular figures who have contributed to building the imaginary of La Rambla and to the thousands of anonymous citizens who have walked it generation after generation.
During the two days of celebration, La Rambla will be transformed into a "stage of stages". The program will combine artistic shows with interventions by cultural, social, and neighborhood entities from Ciutat Vella and the whole of Barcelona. The proposal conceived by Danés takes as its starting point the five historical sections of the promenade —Canaletes, Estudis, Flors, Caputxins, and Santa Mònica— to build different environments and narratives linked to the collective memory of the city.
Each of these areas will have its own personality. There will be spaces of a festive, protest, nostalgic, solidarity, or mixed nature, configuring a route that will invite the public to move from one end of La Rambla to the other to discover different atmospheres and stories about its past, present, and future. The program will also feature the participation of entities and facilities from Raval, Gòtic, and the rest of Ciutat Vella. The aim is for the celebration to reflect the human, social, and cultural diversity of the neighborhoods that coexist around the promenade.
The historic chairs of Canaletes, the florists, the old bird sellers, the popular characters, or the corners that have marked the identity of the promenade will appear reinterpreted through the characteristic visual language of the Catalan creator. The aim is to move away from a contemplative celebration and opt for a participatory experience, built jointly with associations, cultural facilities, and local groups.
The festival will reach the final stretch of one of the most important transformations carried out in the center of Barcelona in recent decades. The works began in October 2022 in the section between Colón and Santa Madrona and, if municipal forecasts are met, will conclude during the first quarter of 2027. The intervention will have involved more than 50 months of work and an investment exceeding 55 million euros.
The project has sought to reclaim space for pedestrians, organize the uses of the road, and reinforce the role of La Rambla as a civic, cultural, and social axis of the city. All of this, with the aim of restoring prominence to an avenue that for decades has had to coexist with tourist pressure and the progressive loss of part of its daily fabric.
Over these years, different initiatives have been promoted to reinforce citizen involvement, from the creation of the La Rambla Coordination Office to the launch of Espai Rambla as an information and dialogue point with residents, merchants, and entities. New measures have also been approved to redefine the uses of the promenade, improve the organization of terraces, renovate the Boqueria market, and reorganize some of the traditional elements that have historically been part of the avenue.
Among these actions, the planned renovation of the Boqueria stands out, which includes a reorganization of commercial activity with a minimum of 50% fresh produce and greater openness towards Plaça de la Gardunya. Work is also underway to make La Rambla the first Terrace Excellence Zone in Barcelona, with more demanding criteria for the organization and image of these spaces.
The end of a long-awaited transformation
The artistic direction of the inauguration will fall to Lluís Danés, one of Catalonia's most renowned visual creators. Set designer, filmmaker, and artistic director, he has been at the forefront of projects such as the Goya Awards and Gaudí Awards galas, shows at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, and the film La vampira de Barcelona, distinguished with five Gaudí Awards.
He will transform La Rambla into an artistic and emotional journey through its five historical sections. For two days, the promenade will host visual installations, music, circus, dance, and poetry performances, as well as tributes to some of the most representative elements of its identity and the popular figures who have been part of its collective imagination.
The inauguration will thus mark not only the end of long-awaited works but also the beginning of a new stage for one of the city's most emblematic spaces. After more than four years of transformation, Barcelona is preparing to look back at La Rambla as what it historically had been.
