The "human touch" thousands of kilometers away

One of the phrases most repeated in the five scenarios of the Barcelona New Economy Week (BNEW) is that "every crisis presents opportunities" that must be found and seized. And this is, precisely, what the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona (CZFB) did when it set out to organize the event in the midst of a pandemic. The challenge: How to hold a business meeting with more than ten thousand attendees digitally?

uring this week, more than 350 speakers have brought their solutions to Barcelona to face the Covid-19 crisis in areas such as logistics, e-commerce, the real estate sector, the digital industry, and new economic zones. However, an event always goes beyond talks or round tables, and networking and parallel activities play a fundamental role in the success of the event.

BNEW set out to transfer that human contact to a digital platform through a networking zone that could help attendees forge relationships and potential collaborations. To do this, the powerful digital platform, developed by the technology consultancy SIRT, has an area where users can get in touch, through chat and video calls, with the attendees they are most interested in.

In this way, through the use of Artificial Intelligence, the data of all registered users is cross-referenced to propose the most suitable contacts and thus unite supply with demand. With more than twenty thousand interactions during the first days of the event, this "innovative" way of networking is becoming one of BNEW's great attractions. The general director of CZFB, Blanca Sorigué, has described this space as "tremendously useful," assuring that it is giving rise to countless "global business opportunities" among participants from more than 100 countries around the world.

Attendees can also enter the BVILLAGE, a virtual agora that aims to be a meeting point for developing new projects. Thus, 128 national and international companies and 52 startups occupy this "space of the future" to meet, share ideas, and generate new business opportunities. During these days, through an automated calendar, attendees and companies are arranging virtual meetings that help them share synergies.

One of BNEW's objectives is also to position Barcelona as a leading city in the development of the new economy and future trends. With the aim of conveying the Mediterranean flavor of the city, the event also has a specific channel to follow an extensive program of cultural and gastronomic activities. Thus, the auditorium of Casa Seat has become a large concert hall this week, hosting artists such as Gwen Perry and the Catalan Judit Nedderman.

Additionally, within Casa Seat itself, the Ametller Origen Mercat d'Autors restaurant, next to the Mercat de la Boquería, hosts various showcookings led by renowned professionals such as ham entrepreneur Enrique Tomás or pastry chef Christian Escribà.
