After analyzing the annual visitor records for each of the events, ten events clearly stand out, having attracted millions of people: As can be seen in the table, the ranking is topped by theAutomobile Barcelonawith 2,949,364 visitors between 1999 and 2024, followed by theSaló Nàutic(1,897,206) andAlimentaria(1.733.118).10 Trends and fluctuations: what do the data tell us?
Below, we extract some conclusions based on the complete analysis of the data:-
- Impact of the pandemic (2020–2021): COVID-19 caused a drastic drop in fair activity. Many events were suspended or registered visitor numbers much lower than usual.
- Biennial cycles and special events: Some events, such as Alimentaria or Automobile Barcelona, are not held every year, but biennially.
- Consolidation of leisure and culture: Events such as the Salón del Manga have been gaining prominence.
- Events with decades of history such as Graphispag or Construmat have lost visitors in recent years, showing a downward trend. In contrast, more recent fairs such as ISE or Smart City Expo have experienced notable growth.
- Automotive, an unbeatable classic: Despite economic crises and sector challenges, Automobile Barcelona leads the ranking.
- Fairs such as Expoquimia or Hispack maintain constant attendance over the years, even with economic crises in between. This demonstrates sector loyalty and clear utility for their target audiences.
- Fairs such as Festival de la Infància or Saló de l'Oci en Família accumulate considerable figures in certain years, especially coinciding with holidays or public holidays. These are more "temporary" events but with a massive and local audience.
- Events such as Bread & Butter, Eurocucina, Bizbarcelona or eShow appear only in some years and then disappear from the calendar, which reflects a high rotation in Fira's programming and a very changing competitive environment.
- The Mobile World Congress (MWC) or the ISE do not lead in absolute number of visitors, but they do in internationalization, positioning Barcelona as a global innovation hub. Quantitatively, their impact is perceived more in the local economy than in gross public figures.
- Events such as Bizbarcelona, Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week or Fira de l'Ocupació do not stand out for massive figures, but show constant participation over the years. This suggests that Fira not only acts as an international platform, but also as a useful ecosystem for the local economy, with events aimed at SMEs, entrepreneurs, businesses or Catalan labor sectors.
