The Barcelona Provincial Council is firmly committed to the municipalities of the province to implement actions for the benefit of a more sustainable, equitable, and cohesive environment. And it does so both within the institution itself and by facilitating this paradigm shift for all local entities in the territory, so as not to leave anyone behind.
Through its public policies and actions in the 311 municipalities of the province, the Provincial Council contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals approved by the United Nations in September 2015, in a diverse territory of more than 7,700 square kilometers and 5.6 million inhabitants. With the support of the Provincial Council, during 2020, more than 33 local entities aligned their policies with this Agenda to improve their territories.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, approved by the United Nations General Assembly and ratified by 193 countries, is a call to eradicate poverty, improve the living conditions of the population, and achieve a rapid transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy. It is concretized in 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets, as a system to make it possible. And it calls on governments, businesses, civil society, the educational sector, and citizens around the planet to promote actions in five areas: people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnerships, for the benefit of both the current population and future generations. The health crisis caused by the pandemic has further reaffirmed the need to care for the planet to prevent the deterioration of the balance of our environment and to address the climate emergency. The 2030 Agenda constitutes a useful and global guide to orient the efforts of everyone towards a better world.
To facilitate the transition towards a more sustainable, equitable, and cohesive economic, social, and environmental reality, the Barcelona Provincial Council offers a set of tools and resources to advance in the application of the Agenda in the territory. The aim is for any local entity in the province of Barcelona to have the necessary elements to adapt the Sustainable Development Goals to its reality.
Tools and resources available to local entities
The new Practical Guide to elaborating the Local 2030 Agenda accompanies, step by step, the process that local entities must carry out to orient their public policies towards the Agenda. Another line of support is the range of economic, material, technical, and training resources offered annually, which allow local entities to advance in local policies aligned with the SDGs. A virtual map, available on the Barcelona Provincial Council website, gathers the experiences of municipalities in Agenda 2030. In addition, the Provincial Council has also published a didactic guide aimed at citizens and local entities on how to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals in the local world.
