The Banco Sabadell Foundation wants to promote scientific knowledge in the sustainable marine industry, strengthening the country's leadership in this field internationally and, among different actions, has created the Banco Sabadell Foundation Award for Marine Sustainability.
The award aims to encourage the work of young Spanish scientists in the field of marine sustainability, resource exploitation, and the regeneration of its natural capital. It is aimed at researchers up to 42 years old who have been carrying out their activity for at least three consecutive years in a Spanish research center.
The awarded research activity must demonstrate its impact on the increase or preservation of biodiversity, the reduction and containment of pollution, the mitigation and reduction of climate change, among others. It will also be necessary to show tangible evidence of the transfer of scientific knowledge into applications that promote sustainable economic development.
The award, according to the foundation, aims to be a recognition of a researcher who has developed their research work on sustainability in the exploitation of marine resources, both in traditional marine industries and in new emerging sectors, or in the regeneration of marine natural capital by recovering goods and services from ecosystems.
For this first edition, the call for applications opened on March 2 and will close on May 2. Chaired by Professor Isabel Cacho from the University of Barcelona (UB), from the Department of Earth and Ocean Dynamics, the jury is composed of Rafael Sarda (CEAB-Blanes), Stefano Pogutz (Bocconi University-Milan), Conxita Ávila (UB), Ángel Borja (AZTI-Pasaya), Jorge Terrados (IMEDEA-Mallorca), Emma Cebrián (University of Girona), Núria Montserrat (IBEC), Jose Carlos García-Gómez (University of Seville), José Luis Sánchez Lizaso (University of Alicante) and Emilio Fernández Suárez (University of Vigo). Its decision will be announced next October.
This award reinforces the foundation's commitment to dissemination, training, and research, as well as support for young talent, and joins other awards dedicated to scientific research granted by the foundation, such as the Award for Biomedical Research, the Award for Sciences and Engineering, and the Award for Economic Research.
