Siemens Mobility is betting on its Cornellà de Llobregat factory. The division of the German multinational has opened a new production line for gearboxes and has established a bogie competence center at the plant. Thus, the company has expanded its production capacity and its product portfolio, linked to the railway sector.
With the opening of the new line, the company aims to respond to the growing demand for traction components required by railway vehicle manufacturers in various projects globally. The new line, which has involved an investment that the company has declined to specify, has been active since May, and will initially have a production capacity of 500 units per year.
The implementation of this new line has required the adaptation of a specific nave in the Cornellà facilities, and will mean an increase in jobs, although the figure has not been detailed. Currently, 320 employees make up the factory's workforce, which has 114 years of history. In addition to opening this line, Siemens Mobility began a year ago to establish a competence center in bogies, which has so far incorporated 80 experts.
At the plant, Siemens manufactures both products for its own business and components for other railway vehicle manufacturers worldwide. "The decision to invest in this new manufacturing line is in line with our vision for the future and our commitment to quality and innovation in the railway sector," defended Agustín Escobar, president and CEO of Siemens Spain.
The also CEO of Siemens Mobility in Southwest Europe has maintained that this new line "will lay the groundwork for future investments aimed at expanding the business to other customers, also in the Iberian market". These investments are foreseen in a context in which Siemens Mobility has factories in ten locations worldwide, among which is its Cornellà plant.
