The total population of the European Union (EU) on January 1, 2018, was 512.6 million people, 2.1% more than the previous year, according to the latest figures provided by Eurostat, the European statistical office.
This population increase, which in absolute figures was 1.1 million, was due to the arrival of immigrant population, since the natural evolution of the EU population was negative: there were more deaths (5.3 million) than births (5.1 million).
By country, Germany is the EU member with the largest population: 82.9 million, representing 16.2% of the total EU. Spain ranks fifth in the EU population ranking, with 46.65 million inhabitants (9.1% of the total).
