Other autumns

Autumn never arrives all at once. I suppose it’s because there is no particular day when summer comes to an end. First, the light changes. Then the air. The evenings get cooler, we put on a jacket. And one day, almost without noticing, a leaf falls to the ground and we realise that, until recently, that leaf belonged to a tree. And now it belongs to the street, or to the wind.

The same thing happens with places, in a way. One day we still feel they are very much ours and, not long after, they become part of the landscape we remember. Who we walked there with. The light filtering through that tree. The chairs on that terrace, so uncomfortable, and yet what a lovely place to sit.

Now they are the streets we have learned to cross in a different way. The squares where we played, read, ran or simply sat are now pieces of a memory. Squares and triangles forming a puzzle that is currently under construction and that —it has happened again— is already the memory of another autumn.

But there will be others. Other autumns. And this one, too, will have been ours.
