The Swiss pharmaceutical multinational Novartis has decided to bet big on its Sandoz division before, as it recently announced, spinning it off into a new listed company, to create the largest manufacturer of generic and biosimilar medicines in Europe by revenue.
In line with this strategy, it will disburse 63 million euros until 2024 in the Sandoz factory in Palafolls, destined for the production of antibiotics. The investment will create 84 jobs and will be used to expand the production capacity of the facilities by 150% to go from 200 to 500 tons per year of raw materials for making antibiotics.
In this way, the Maresme factory will become, along with one of the pharmaceutical company's plants in Austria dedicated to oral antibiotics, one of the group's most innovative production centers in Europe, and will deepen its specialization in the production of sterile antibiotic mixtures.
Novartis' investment in Palafolls is part of a broader package of up to 77.4 million that the group will disburse in Spain this year. There is a project of 12.9 million in an innovative facility in Castellanos de Moriscos (Salamanca) for the production of personalized medicines used for the treatment of breast or prostate tumors, among others. The new factory will require the hiring of at least 20 people.
Likewise, it will invest another 1.5 million in the expansion of its plant in Almunia de Doña Godina (Zaragoza). This reform will multiply production capacity by five, double export capacity and lead to the creation of another 20 new jobs.
