Mercadona has set this year at 409 million euros the total amount of bonuses it will distribute to its 90,000 workers for the results achieved in 2020 and also in recognition of the effort they have made during the pandemic.

The supermarket chain chaired by Juan Roig paid 366 million on March 1 as a bonus for objectives, a figure that is added to the 43 million that it already paid in April 2020 to reward the extraordinary work done by the staff during the first weeks of the health crisis, where stores received an avalanche of buyers and stocks of many products ran out.

"In a year like 2020, so complex to manage, the company has achieved the best management in its history. Guaranteeing the daily opening of more than 1,600 supermarkets in Spain and Portugal would not have been possible without the talent and daily effort of each and every one of the workers who make up Mercadona, without their commitment to prepare and serve the stores, or to deliver online orders in the very difficult times we are living," highlights Patricia Cortizas, General Director of Human Resources and External Relations at Mercadona.

Mercadona has been distributing a part of its annual profit among its workers for 20 years. Since 2001, it is estimated that 4,200 million euros have been distributed in bonuses to reward the achievement of the objectives set by the leading chain in the distribution sector. For a worker with less than five years of seniority, this annual bonus is equivalent to one month's salary; but the amount doubles, equivalent to two monthly payments, once five years of permanence in the company are exceeded, an element that allows Mercadona to retain its workers and minimize turnover. If this bonus and the usual extra payments are included, Mercadona's average net salary is approximately 1,800 euros.
