There is a territory in the digital world where men gather to empower themselves against women, feminism, and equality. In this space, all types of men, of all ages, fit, and the only premise they must fulfill is to share biased and manipulated information that places them as victims and oppressed by women. Where they are most seen and followed is on Twitch, Tik-Tok, and YouTube platforms, but they are growing across the entire digital sphere. This territory also refers to the different environments where this discourse takes hold and finds followers. It can be in the digital world, but also in in-person forums, in certain clubs, and specific areas of some cities. This ideological and political territory is also more associated with people aligned with right-wing and far-right parties. The age group where this message is most consolidated is Generation Z: young males aged 14 to 26.
Aggressiveness and threatening and violent language are a condition and, above all, women are not wanted. They are hated. Women are to blame for all the bad things happening in society. The situation has reached such a point that the message, totally manipulated, makes it seem that young people, and men as a gender, are unprotected and at a disadvantage against the current of feminism that seeks equality. The ideology of feminism has gone too far, and now men are the victims.
Within the manosphere are incels (involuntary celibates), heterosexual men who are very angry because they cannot have sexual relations with women. Feminism makes women egocentric and promiscuous and always chooses the most attractive ones. This lack of control makes them feel rejected and unable to have all the relationships they would like. We are facing a masculinity that is sustained by misogyny and is not willing to give up any privilege or acquired rights that they have historically enjoyed.
Let's educate in schools about feminism and put the manosphere in the spotlight to dissect it and build a generation that does not follow the herd. The freedom that networks give us democratizes information, education, culture, and access to everything we desire. But this same freedom and ease of creating platforms with all kinds of content and leaders, real or fictitious, with a terrorist discourse and hateful intentions, will never lead us to a good outcome. Here, artificial intelligence helps accelerate content creation and, therefore, enhances the difficulty of detecting to what extent what is happening in the manosphere is real or fictitious. And the ethical debate is served.
In a territory, in this sphere, so open, without limits, without ethics, without conditions and without borders, a sifting and a criterion are urgent to filter what is propaganda and what takes us back to the last century and to the oppressions of dictatorships. We are giving free rein to an underworld that is taking root strongly at a vital moment when young people are more permeable to these more extremist discourses that demand activism and violence.
Education is the only tool to provide young people with arguments, with analytical capacity, with spaces for dialogue and with critical thinking. Let's educate in schools about feminism and put the manosphere on the table to dissect it and build a generation that does not follow the pack.
