What songs will play as Barcelona bids farewell to Mercè with fireworks? This year, the answer will bear the name of Josep Montero. The singer and driving force behind Oques Grasses has been selected to create the soundtrack for the Piromusical, which will be held on September 27 at a new location: Nova Icària beach. It will replace Avinguda Maria Cristina as the venue due to ongoing works around Fira de Barcelona. For the occasion, Montero has prepared an “eclectic selection, open to different styles and sensibilities,” with a prominent presence of Catalan music. The songs will accompany the fireworks display by Pirotècnica Igual, which is once again in charge of the show.
Montero takes over from Rosalía and Estopa, who selected the soundtrack for the Piromusical in 2024 and 2025, respectively. The formula —selecting an artist or musical project to choose the music for one of the festival’s biggest moments— was introduced by the city in 2023, when Sónar took charge of the Piromusical to close its 30th-anniversary celebrations. The choice also comes at a key moment for the musician: Oques Grasses is preparing to bid farewell to the stage with four concerts at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, on October 5, 7, 9 and 10. All four dates sold out within minutes, making the group the first Catalan act to fill the Olympic Stadium four times, with nearly 220,000 spectators expected. Montero (Roda de Ter, 1985) was an electrician before deciding, at the age of 26, to dedicate himself to music. A former drummer, he began composing and performing as a solo artist before forming Oques Grasses in 2010.
