Joan Font, president of Bon Preu, has been named Cecot Personality of the Year 2026 at an edition of the Nit de l’Empresa in which his speech resonated strongly with Catalonia’s business community. A discreet figure who rarely appears in the public spotlight, Font used the award ceremony to share a vision of business that goes beyond financial results: principles only have value when one is willing to bear their cost. Quoting Albert Camus, he recalled that “principles are words and empty rhetoric until they cost money”.
Born in Torelló, Font took part in the opening of the first self-service store in Manlleu in 1974, the business that would eventually become Bon Preu. From Osona, and without foreign investment, he has driven the growth of a group that now generates €2.6115 billion in annual revenue, employs nearly 12,000 people and operates more than 220 stores. Proximity, fresh produce, logistics and strong ties to the local community have become the hallmarks of a distinctive business model that competes with major international retail chains.
In his speech, Font called on business leaders to communicate more openly, both within and beyond their organisations, and raised concerns about Catalonia’s shortcomings in infrastructure and housing. He also defended business decisions that prioritise working conditions over cost savings. His message makes the Cecot award more than a recognition of a successful career: it is a public statement in favour of a form of leadership measured by actions and by the decisions one is willing to make.
