New step in the processing that will make possible the southern access to the Port of Barcelona. The Council of Ministers has given the green light to the agreement to execute the new accesses, which will be signed on November 15 between the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Adif, Puertos del Estado, and the Port Authority of Barcelona.
With this authorization, progress is being made in improving the connectivity of the Barcelona port infrastructure, with an investment that will amount to 730 million euros. The agreement regulates both the financing and the execution of the works for the new port accesses, both road and rail.
After overcoming all necessary procedures, this authorization represents the definitive step for the agreement to be signed between the four administrations, so that work can then begin, whose financing was already authorized by the Council of Ministers in September.
The agreement, whose draft was approved in June, establishes that the ministry will assume 263 million euros of the investment through the General Directorate of Roads, while 266 million will be borne by Adif, and 200 million will fall on the port authority of the Barcelona enclave.
The actions aimed at improving the connectivity of the Barcelona port will be divided into two projects: one focused on the road axis, and the other on the railway axis. They will include the creation of the road axis and the connection with the Zona Franca and the Pratenc Industrial Estate, as well as the full development of the entire road axis, with the connection branch to Can Tunis.
This authorization by the Council of Ministers represents a significant step in a process that has been advancing for months, and that has been years in preparation. So much so that the port already awarded two years ago the works to prepare the land to build the new accesses.
In addition, the ministry tendered in November last year the services contract for the drafting of the layout and construction project for the road area. With an amount of 2.9 million, the procedures for awarding this contract are being finalized, while the drafting of the railway project was awarded in June for 9.3 million.
With the new accesses through the southern sector of the port, the infrastructure expects to gain connectivity with its surroundings and especially with key logistics areas such as the Free Trade Zone. Therefore, it will simultaneously gain competitiveness, to continue positioning and consolidating itself as an essential port in the Mediterranean with global reach.
