Francesc Josep Moreso

For the first time, a transplant between two people with HIV has been performed in Spain. It took place at Vall d'Hebron, opening a new chapter in organ donation programs. The intervention, a living-donor kidney transplant performed with robotic surgery, was made possible after the regulatory change in 2025 that eliminated the prohibition, in effect since 1987. As highlighted by the Head of the Renal Transplant Section at the hospital, Francesc Josep Moreso, for the first time the donor was a person with HIV, in a process where the hospital's Donation and Transplant programs coordinator, Albert Sandiumenge; the Infectious Diseases specialist Jordi Navarro; and the head of the Urology Service, Enric Trilla, were also key.

Moreso is one of Catalonia's leading kidney transplant specialists. He is Head of the Renal Transplant Unit at Vall d'Hebron and Senior Researcher in the Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation Research Group at the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR). He earned his medical degree from the University of Barcelona before completing his specialization in Nephrology at Bellvitge University Hospital, where he also began his career before joining Vall d'Hebron in 2009. He has been a faculty member at the Department of Medicine of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since 2017 and has held the rank of Associate Professor since 2021. His research focuses on kidney transplant pathology and new methods for its evaluation, and he has co-authored more than 180 scientific papers in international journals.
