El Corte Inglés de Can Dragó hosts until October 3 an exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), highlighting the most relevant milestones that, through this entity, have contributed to achieving great advances in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
The exhibition 50 years changing the history of cancer provides a general overview and focuses on those projects that have been developed with the support of the distribution group, which has maintained a close collaboration with the association for years. Thanks to the support that the AECC has obtained from companies such as El Corte Inglés and other institutions, to date, the entity has allocated 92 million euros to 525 active projects, in which more than 1,000 researchers have worked.
Currently, the AECC and El Corte Inglés are promoting a new project in favor of breast cancer research. This research will be financed with about 280,000 euros raised in the campaign that El Corte Inglés organized last year, on the occasion of World Breast Cancer Day, which is celebrated every October 19. A multidisciplinary team from the Clínic de Barcelona, Doce de Octubre (Madrid), Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) (Barcelona) hospitals and the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra are working together on its development.
Among the developments previously supported by El Corte Inglés, the research led by Dr. Violeta Serra, from the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO), also stands out. Her research has led to a new test for the diagnosis and classification of breast cancer, which guides doctors in selecting the most appropriate treatment for each patient. This work has allowed validating the capacity of this test in preclinical models and opening its doors to a clinical trial with patients, already underway.
These actions are part of El Corte Inglés' commitment to society, which leads it to participate responsibly in different social, cultural, educational and sports activities.
Among future challenges, the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) fights for Spain to have a National Cancer Research Plan that contributes to the survival of patients suffering from this disease reaching 70% by 2030 and that promotes equal access to the results of research for all people.
