With close to 80,000 outpatient visits and more than 1,000 neurosurgical procedures over the past year, the Institut Clínic de Neurociències (ICN) at Hospital Clínic Barcelona is opening a new chapter under the leadership of Eduard Vieta. The incoming director takes the helm of an institute that unites clinical care, research, and teaching across neurological conditions and mental health disorders. The ICN brings together four departments – Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry and Psychology, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology – alongside 14 specialised functional units and working groups, which together over the past year managed 78,709 consultations, delivered 24,750 Day Hospital sessions, and recorded 2,958 patient discharges alongside 1,110 neurosurgical operations.
Vieta, until now head of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at the Clínic, is a professor at the Universitat de Barcelona and a researcher at IDIBAPS, where he leads the Bipolar and Depressive Disorders research group and coordinates the translational research programme in brain disorders. His scientific work has centred primarily on bipolar disorder, precision psychiatry, and the development of novel treatments, earning him prominent international recognition.
