Damm intensifies its plans regarding energy efficiency and sustainability. The Barcelona-based group has just expanded the photovoltaic installations in several of its plants and announces an additional investment of 3.6 million euros for 2023, which will allow it to consolidate itself as the brewery with the largest extension of solar panels in the Iberian Peninsula.
The latest expansions have allowed Damm to increase its photovoltaic surface area to 32,183 square meters, which has enabled the company to currently self-produce 7.1 GWh of clean energy per year. Now, it plans to install an additional 23,500 square meters next year at the El Prat de Llobregat factory, at the ZAL logistics platform of the Port of Barcelona, at the La Moravia malting plant, and at the beer production centers it owns in Murcia and Malaga.
According to the group chaired by Demetrio Carceller, the energy model implemented in recent years at Damm is based on promoting energy self-sufficiency and has allowed the company to already generate 60% of the electrical energy consumed by its activity. The remaining 40% is also certified green energy. This high self-consumption ratio has not only been achieved with solar panels but also with the adoption of other renewable energy sources such as cogeneration and trigeneration from biogas, technologies that have allowed the company to reduce its external energy dependence and also save costs in a context of high electricity prices.
Another key factor in advancing the sustainability plan and reducing consumption has been the improvement of the efficiency of production processes, so that in the last decade, the energy used in the production of each hectoliter of beer has been reduced by 45%. Juan Antonio López Abadía, Damm's director of energy and environment optimization, emphasizes that sustainability and lower consumption of natural resources "is a priority" for the company, which will continue to work to "successfully conclude the energy transition towards more sustainable models" that allow "minimizing environmental impact" and complying with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the 2030 Agenda.
